The Weekly Sam: A Documentary on America’s Reading Problem

This is a letter Sam sent to Mr. Wayne Thompson of Cloud Ten Pictures.    While he never got a reply, there was a documentary entitled Indoctrination   http://www.indoctrinationmovie.com/   which Sam appeared.

Dear Mr. Thompson,

I am the author of ten books on education, with a main interest in the issue of literacy and
how schools teach reading to make it impossible for many children to learn to read.
We have had a reading problem in this country and Canada ever since the 1930s when the
public schools changed the way reading is taught. They discarded the time-tested
alphabetic-phonics method and imposed a new sight-word or whole-word method that
teaches children to read English as if it were Chinese.

Americans first became aware of this problem in 1955 when Dr. Rudolf Flesch wrote his
famous book, Why Johnny Can’t Read. In that book he told parents and educators that
when you impose an ideological reading program on an alphabetic system you get
dyslexia and reading disability.

In my various writings I have shown why progressive educators decided to impose this
faulty teaching method on the public schools of North America. It had nothing to do
with enhancing literacy. Its aim was to destroy independent intelligence and turn the
children into little socialists. In 2007, the National Endowment for the Arts released an
alarmingv8b7y report on America’s declining literacy, Reading at Risk. The
Endowment’s chairman, Dana Gioia, stated: “This is a massive social problem. We are
losing the majority of the new generation. They will not achieve anything close to their
potential because of poor reading.”

A hard-hitting documentary film exposing this socialist plan to destroy literacy ought to
be made. When millions of children are unable to read the word of God, they become
the victims of any despotic power that hates God. I wish I had the means to make such a
film. But I do not. And that is why I am writing you. Your interest in the health of
children should make you angry at the thought that millions of children are being
deliberately dumbed down and turned into functional illiterates in order to serve the
purposes of atheist socialists. If such a project interests you, please let me know.

Sincerely yours,

The Weekly Sam: The Benefits of Cursive Writing

The Benefits of Cursive Writing By Sam Blumenfeld

The teaching of handwriting has a low priority among educators these days. They believe that handwriting is passe and that in the future everyone will be using worn processors to do their writing. But have you noticed how easy it is to make errors when writing an email? Parents can be quite confused by the subject of handwriting. So whenever I lecture at a homeschool convention, I always ask by a show of hands if parents think that handwriting should be formally taught. Usually, the response is unanimously positive. -So you agree that teaching your child to write is an important part of your homeschooling curriculum. The next question I raise is: -If you believe that handwriting should be formally taught. do you believe that your child should be taught manuscript – also known as ‘ball and-stick’ – first or cursive first?  Most parents assume that ball-and-stick should precede cursive, because that’s the way they were taught in school. Besides, it is supposed to be easier that way. But then I tell them that when I was in primary school in the 1930s, like their grandparents, we were all taught cursive handwriting, or what was then known as “penmanship, · using pens dipped in real ink.

That was before ballpoint pens were invented. We were actually taught in the first grade that there was a correct way to hold a pen so that we would be able write with ease and facility without tiring. Thus, in those ancient days, an important part of the primary curriculum was the development of good handwriting, and we were given plenty of drill to make that possible. This surprises most parents who assume that print script always preceded cursive writing. But when I tell them otherwise, I then have to explain why cursive should precede print script and not vice versa. If you teach a child to print for the first two years, that child develops writing habits that will become permanent. Thus, when you try to get your child to switch to cursive in the third grade, you will find resistance to learning a whole new way of writing.

That child may continue to print for the rest of his or her life. Some children develop a hybrid handwriting consisting of a mixture of both print and cursive. That seems to have become the dominant form of writing in America. And there are those children who develop a good cursive handwriting because they have always wanted to and practiced it secretly on the side. Thus, experience dearly indicates that if you teach ball-and-stick first, your child may never develop a decent cursive handwriting, while if you teach cursive first, your child can always learn to print very nicely later on. In other words, cursive first and print later makes good developmental sense. An important and frequently overlooked benefit is that cursive helps a child learn to read. With ball-and-stick it is very easy to confuse b’s and d’s. But with cursive, a b starts like an I, and a d starts like an a. The distinction that children make in writing the letters in cursive carries over to the reading process. In addition, in writing print script, the letter’s may be all over the page, sometimes written from left to right and from right to left. In cursive, where all of the letters connect. the child learns directional discipline. This helps in learning to spell, for how the letters join with one another creates habits of hand movement that automatically aid the spelling process. Of course, your child should also be taught to print. That can easily be done after your child has developed a good cursive handwriting. Another important benefit of cursive first is if your child is left-handed. A right-handed individual tilts the paper counterclockwise in order to give one’s handwriting the proper slant. With the left-handed child, the paper must be tilted in an extreme clockwise position so that the child can write from the bottom up. If the paper is not tilted clockwise, the left-handed child may want to use the hook. form of writing. This usually happens when the child is taught ball-and-stick first with the paper in a straight up position. If you consider good handwriting or fine penmanship a desired outcome of your home teaching, then you must teach cursive first. There are a number of good cursive programs available on the market. The Abeka program from Pensacola Christian College is probably one of the best available. I am often asked if Italic is a good way of teaching a child to write. Italic script is more in the class of calligraphy than handwriting, and therefore takes longer to learn and requires more skill than a standard cursive handwriting. So, simply learn this simple principle: cursive first. print later.

Camp Constitution’s 14th Annual Family Camp

Camp Constitution’s 14th Annual Family Camp concluded last Friday (July 22). The camp was held, for the third year in a row, at the Singing Hills Christian Camp in Plainfield, NH. On Sunday July 17, the first day of camp, attendees were visited by General John Stark depicted by reenactor Richard Wright of Troy, NH.

Senior campers, and adults attended classes taught by world renowned astrophysicist Professor Wille Soon, journalist and author Alex Newman, who hosts a daily show on Frank Speech, Rev, Steven Craft, Liberty Counsel attorney Jonathan Alexandre, Catherine White of the Constitution Decoded, and Pastor David Whitney of the Institution on the Constitution just to name a few.  All the classes were videotaped and are available on Camp Constitution’s Rumble page:  https://rumble.com/account/content?type=all

(Attorney Jonathan Alexandre)

The Junior campers were divided into two groups 4-8 years old taught by Mrs. Edith Craft, and ages 9-12 taught by Mrs. Roberta Steward and Mrs. Kathy Mickel who also serves as the camp nurse.  Mrs. Bonnie Wilder of the Daughters of the American Revolution gave the Junior campers lessons on U.S. History. The Juniors were entertained by Alan Belanger, a professional clown and juggler who made creative balloons for the campers.

Each day started out with an optional swim and/or run led by Mrs. Erin and Mr. Sean McDermott of Revolution Fitness. Daily morning devotions and flag raising started each day at 7:50 AM where campers, and staff heard Reveille played by Franklin Soon. On Wednesday afternoon, some campers and staff took advantage of the optional field trip to the nearby Augustus Saint-Gaudens Homestead. Attendees also had the opportunity to participate in marksmanship classes.

(Augustus Saint-Gaudens Homestead Cornish, NH)

This year’s Super Campers were first-time camper Skyler Ferrell and veteran camper Franklin Soon, and Mrs. Kathy Mickel was voted Super Staffer.

A testimonial from a first-time attendee. Mrs. Sara Stanizeski Pennella:

“It is hard to find the right words for this week. Quite possibly one of the hardest weeks while simultaneously being one of the best. God finds ways to challenge you to be better, even if those ways are wildly uncomfortable, physically, mentally, and emotionally. But to wrap it up in a sparkly bow as a gift with friends you can ugly cry in front of, grow in front of, learn with, build memories and connections with is the ultimate end result. What our children (and adults!) learned was state of the art with world renowned experts in a wide variety of fields to help us understand our great nation’s constitution. From law, to science, to history, the richness of the content couldn’t be paralleled even in a semester at top universities.

So incredibly grateful to be able to share this experience with my children and our homeschool crew. God really has his hand on Camp Constitution and their incredible founder and staff. Thank you to Nicole Poisson Chu for rallying us all to go!!! We will definitely be back, just maybe with more towels, Lysol and an air mattress.”

And from another first tine attendee Mrs. Rachel Nelson:

“Last week Spencer and I attended Camp Constitution in NH. Our American history lover passed up a week of soccer camp for this experience! We went with 6 other homeschool families from our area and joined others from around the country.

Our days were packed with classes, fellowship, swimming, sports, off-site field trips, a few meals out, and nightly bonfires. Spencer sang at the fires, performed in 2 skits, and I recited Paul Revere’s Ride by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow while standing on a picnic table. A military veteran brought along two full sized cannons and one of the afternoons we shot them off along the hillside! Such excitement! Spencer came home with an assortment of real Civil War bullets and authentic cannonball after a stop at a local antique shop. We ended our last day with an unexpected trip to the American Precision Museum and a second visit to the Cornish Bridge (which Lafayette crossed in 1825!!) after locking ourselves out of the condo. Ha! Truly an amazing week alongside wonderful friends, and an experience we hope to enjoy again next year.”

Mark your calendars for next year’s camp which will run from July 16-21, 2023, at Singing Hills

The Glorious Fourth

Mrs. Wolf, my eight-grade history teacher in a Boston Public School, ensured that her students not only knew the reasons why the 13 colonies united against Great Britain, and declared their independence from Great Britain but had her students memorize a good portion of the Declaration of Independence.   They also had to know about the men who signed what could have been their death warrant if they were unsuccessful, and the sacrifices they made.

As a means of honoring the memory of those brave men and my beloved history teacher, I felt that I had an obligation to share this information. Over the years, I would help man information tables on the Boston Common with a sign that reads “Honoring the Signers of the Declaration of Independence.  How Many Can You Name?’   Many of the people who stopped by our table were in town to attend the Boston Pops annual concert which would end with an incredible fireworks display.  Few of them could rattle off more than two or three signers, but they left the table with a copy of the Declaration with all the names of the signers.

July 2, 1776, is the day that the Second Continental Congress voted for independence and for two days, delegates debated and edited the Declaration written over a three-week period by Thomas Jefferson.  John Hancock as the President of Congress was the only delegate to sign the Declaration on July 4th.

Delegate John Adams of Massachusetts. the man who probably did more to get independence declared said this prior to the vote:

‘Sink or swim, live or die, survive of perish, I give my hand and heart for this vote…. You and I indeed may rue it.  We may not live to the time when this Declaration shall be made good.  We may die; die colonists; die slaves; die, it may be ignominiously and on the scaffold.  Be it so, be it so

“If it be the pleasure of Heaven that my country shall require the poor offering of my life, the victim shall be ready…. But while I do live, let me have a country, or at least the hope of a country and that of a free country…

“Sir, before God, I believe the hour is come.  My judgement approves the measure, and my whole heart is in it. All that I have, and all that I am, and all that I hope, in this life, I am now ready here to stake upon it, and I leave off as I began, that live or die, survive or perish, I am for the Declaration,  It is my living sentiment and by the blessings of God, it shall be my dying sentiment, Independence now and Independence forever.”

The Lives of the Signers

One of the best books about the signers of the Declaration of Independence is

Biographical Sketches of the Signers of the Declaration of American Independence by B. J. Lossing published in 1848 and reprinted by Wall Builders.  In this excellent book, we get the true historical background of the signing of the document and a brief biographical sketch of the men who signed it.  One of the most compelling facts is that not one of the signers betrayed the new nation.  Not one “flip-flopped” or became “politically correct.  When they pledged their lives and sacred honor, they meant it.  Of the 56 men who signed the Declaration, several of them and their family members died from their wounds or hardships. Five were captured and imprisoned under harsh conditions. Twelve had their homes burned to the ground, and 17 were impoverished.  And, no, none of them made these sacrifices to promote the institute of slavery.  Indeed, the Declaration of Independence helped pave the way for the ultimate abolition of slavery in the United States.

The New York delegates Francis Lewis, William Floyd, Philip Livingston, and Lewis Morris bared a good portion of the British brunt losing their wealth and their property destroyed.  Francis Lewis’ wife was imprisoned and died shortly after her release due to the brutal treatment she received. Philip Livingston had his businesses and home confiscated, and he died in 1778 broke and separated from his family.

Today, in some circles, the term “sacred honor” is considered a silly anachronism of a less enlightened era and regard the signers as “dead white European males whose values must be demeaned.  However, we at Camp Constitution-staying true to our motto “Honoring the Past…Teaching the Present…Preparing the Future, along with, what I believe to be most Americans will never forget the true meaning of Independence Day.

Happy Birthday United States of America-the greatest nation in the history of the world.  May you have many more birthdays, and may its citizens never forget the brave men and woman that have helped keep our nation free.

Remember the fuel crisis in the 1970s?  Gas prices were high.  Gas stations rational gas and hospitals had an increase of patients due to people swallowing gasoline as they tried to syphon gas tanks.  Well, this gem from the 1970s should be of interest to you.  The more things change, the more they stay the same.  I am linking the article since it was typewritten and it included some long hand:   http://blumenfeld.campconstitution.net/Transcripts/Inventing%20Our%20Way%20Out%20Of%20The%20Fuel%20Crises.pdf

Camp Constitution Applauds the U.S. Supreme Court’s Ruling on “Roe v Wade”

While today’s U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling overturning the 1973 “Roe v Wade” decision will not end all abortions in the United States, we are delighted by the decision.  This decision will give states the power to determine the laws on abortion.  As of this writing, Missouri has outlawed abortion.  Let’s pray that other states will do likewise.   Hear Camp Constitution’s chaplain Rev. How Pastors Can Recover America

Camp Constitution recently sponsored speaking engagements in Lexington, MA, Alton, NH and Lebanon, NH for Dr. Rick Scarborough of Recover America   https://recoveramerica.com/   As a part of the modern-day Black Robe Regiment, Dr. Rick is organizing pastors to lead their members to register to vote, vote according to Biblical principles, and as the Lord leads, run for office.  In this presentation which took place at the First Parish Congregational Church in Lebanon, Maine Wednesday June 22, Dr. Scarborough explains how he was able to mobilize hundreds of pastors in Texas back in 2002 which turned Texas red, and his project to organize pastors around the United States.

From Recover America’s website:

Mission:  Recover America exists to equip and mobilize Pastors and their congregations to engage in the civil arena, providing Biblical solutions to today’s most pressing issues.

Overview:  Recover America is a non-denominational ministry, representing all churches united in their commitment to the Lordship of Christ and His call to believers from every faith persuasion to join our mission to take Jesus into the civil arena and provide Biblical solutions to practical problems. We believe the Bible speaks to every area of life and that Pastors are the key to a Third Great Awakening.

Strategy:  Find Pastors and other faith leaders who will take their faith outside the four walls of the Church and become Salt and Light in the civil arena and help shape public policy. (See Matthew 5:13-16)

Current Focus: We believe electing Biblically focused school board leaders is one of, if not the single most pressing issue we face today as frequently our children are being overly sexualizing, indoctrinated with various forms of Critical Race Theory, and socially engineered by radical theories that fuel gender confusion by their schools. If this is allowed to go on while they are sleeping under our roofs, think of how easily their minds can be twisted once they leave home and attend a university. At the same time, our children are not being taught the fundamentals of reading, writing, and math. Furthermore, many school districts have become financial disasters.

To implement our mission, Recover America engages in the following activities, among others: Hosts Pastor and faith leader conferences and training sessions, hosts forums for congregations to learn more about school board candidates, develops and distributes tools such as voter guides based on values, and continually encourages our pastors, donors, and friends to get involved.

In 2021, our focus was on Greater Houston school board elections including Houston Independent School (Houston ISD) and Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District (Cy-Fair ISD), the 1st and 3rd largest school districts respectively in Texas with more than 300,000 children enrolled. For the 2022 elections, we are expanding to cover all of the great state of Texas maintaining school boards as our top, but not exclusive, priority.

Successes So Far:  Conservative values won an unprecedented victory in the 2021 Greater Houston School Board elections. Two committed Christians, including a Pastor, won runoff races for Houston ISD, the largest school district in Texas. Additionally, Biblical values candidates won all three positions in Cy-Fair ISD, the 3rd largest Texas school district. We have now witnessed the election of five Christian Conservatives to school boards, all replacing long-tenure Leftist incumbents, and impacting over 300,000 students. This is Great News! (See Mark 9:24)

Camp Constitution is working with Recover America to organize pastors and clergy at the state level.  Readers that want to help us may contact me at campconstitution1@gmail.com We plan to host an on-line meeting in the near future with Dr. Scarborough.

The Sam Blumenfeld Legacy

I first met Sam Blumenfeld back in 1989 at an event in Windham, NH which hosted an eyewitness to Tiananmen Square massacre. At our meeting Sam said, “Never let your children set foot in a government school.” It was some of the best advice I ever took.

Sam was born in the South Bronx in 1926. The son of Jewish immigrants from Poland. Sam went to New York’s public schools where he learned to read via phonics. Sam would recount to audiences in later years that his classrooms had chairs and desks bolted to the floor, and the only things mounted on the walls of the classroom where pictures of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and the letters of the alphabet in cursive. Over the PA system, his principal would lead the school in prayer, and read the “Twenty-Third Psalm.” His parents instilled a love of the United States which was reinforced by his teachers in New York City’s public schools. Sam was a World War II veteran who served as an artilleryman in the Italian Theater under General Mark Clark. He authored poems about his wartime experiences including a stanza which tells the story of Sam showing mercy to a sick German soldier whom he shared his food with and one on death:

The Dead: Inhabiting the Fields I would have never known the smell of death

had I not gone to Italy and rode across the valley.

And surely it is peculiar for I had never seen dead bodies before

and I had always held my breath when a hearse crossed my path.

But in the valley, I could not close my eyes or steal past the” dead,

nor could I hold my breath, for death filled the air and was soaked in the fields,

and its odor was sweetly mixed with that of the soil,

and when darkness fell the land and sky became so arranged

that the l living was undistinguishable from the dead and the dead placed their arms around all that slept into the night

After the war, Sam attended and graduated from City College of New York and then studied in France where he befriended author James Baldwin. In the late 1950s. Sam worked for the publishing company Grosset and Dunlop where he would edit the Hardy Boy and Nancy Drew mystery books. In the early 1960s, his friend attorney Watson Washburn, a tennis star, asked him to join his Reading Reform Foundation. Sam asked why it was necessary to have such a foundation believing that government schools still used phonics to teach children to read. Mr. Washburn suggested that Sam read Why Johnny Can’t Read by Rudolf Flesch. The book was rightfully critical of the look-say method of reading and promoted the use of intensive phonics. The book changed Sam’s life. Sam went beyond Mr. Flesch’s research leading Sam to conclude that the so-called progressive educators were deliberately dumbing down the children of America.

Sam went on to be an editor for a now-defunct weekly publication “The Review of the News” He also founded American Friends of Katanga, American Friends of Algeria, and the Society of Jewish Americanists. He befriended many leaders in the liberty movement but his affiliation with Robert Welch and The John Birch Society caused a rift with Sam and some of his what is now known as Neo-Conservatives friends including William Buckley, and Victor Lasky.

Sam’s first book was How to Start Your Own Private School: And Why You Need One. He took his own advice by helping to start Hyde Park Academy and South Boston Academy in Boston during the height of forced bussing. Sam became “a sad atheist” after the death of his father, but while researching the early history of education in Colonial New England, he became a devout Christian.

By the mid-1970s, Sam became a pioneer in the modern home school movement. His follow up books included Is Public Education Necessary and the NEA: Trojan Horse in the American Education. His last book which he co-authored with Alex Newman was Crimes of the Educators. Sam was ahead of his times when he warned parents that children are at risk in government schools physically, spiritually, morally, and intellectually. Sam’s most important works was his Alpha-Phonics workbook which my wife and I used to teach our children how to read. Unlike most reading books, it has no pictures. Sam would remark that “You do not need puppets popping out of trash cans to teach children how to read. Sam not only taught children how to read, but he also instructed adults who were functionally illiterate due to the government schools use of the look-say method. Sam volunteered his services at Boston’s WAAIT-We Are All in This Together where he taught inner-city adults how to read.

Sam was a regular at homeschool conventions all over the United States where he would promote phonics, cursive first and basic arithmetic. He also would give lectures on the plan to dumb the children of America down,   From Horace Mann’s compulsory educations laws to John Dewey and his goal to use the schoolroom to promote socialism and atheism, to sex education and death education, to  Marc Tucker, and his “school to work” policies under the Clinton Administration,  to Bill Gates’ creation and funding of Common Core,  Sam presented damning evidence to prove that our nation’s government schools were under the control of the elites who hated America.  He would appear on television and radio talk shows, and his writing would be published in dozens including ‘Boston Magazine,” “The New American,” “The Chalcedon Report, ““Imprimis,” and World Net Daily.

Twenty or so years ago, he told me that he would do his writing and lectures until he drops. He was true to his word. I last visited him in late May of 2015 where he was on his deathbed. He was still autographing copies of his books. He died several days later June 1, 2015. I made a pledge to Sam on his death bed that his works would be used by unborn generations. He willed me most of his library, papers, and recording. Thanks to two talented people, Mark Affleck, our camp newspaper editor, and Eric Conover, our webmaster, the Samuel Blumenfeld Archives was created, we were able to digitize most of his books, unpublished manuscripts, articles, newsletters, and speeches in both MP3 and MP4 formats. The archives receive over two million views a year and thousands of downloads of his “Alpha-Phonics” and other works. People from all over the world but in the U.S. are using his reading program to create highly literate children and adults. We recently heard from a school in Zimbabwe that found the archive and is now using Sam’s “Alpha-Phonics” The archive is available as a free resource (donations accepted)  https://campconstitution.net/sam-blumenfeld-archive/
