While I knew that Sam Blumenfeld was a WW II veteran, he spoke little of his military experience. It wasn’t until he passed away, and had the opportunity to go through his library that I learned of his military service. Sam was an artilleryman in the U.S. Army and send to Northern Italy in March of 1945. Sam was involved in escorting German POWs and wrote a poem about taking pity on the German soldiers and how he offered his rations to one. In this linked article, Sam writes about his return visit to Italy and the family he befriended: http://blumenfeld.campconstitution.net/personal/On%20Revisiting%20Old%20GI%20Haunts.pdf
